June 7, 2022 - The Firebirds are pleased to announce that Sammy Stuart is the recipient of this year's Randy Yates Memorial Firebirds Scholarship. Sammy is a current Firebirds 18u-Knapp member and has won an unrestricted scholarship to support herself in college.

Stuart is a recent graduate of West Springfield High School. She will be attending the University of Mary Washington in the Fall where she will play softball for the Eagles. Sammy has been a Firebird for eight years and has been a part of NVGSA for even longer. She has umpired 10u house game for several seasons and worked as a volunteer with the 10u Firebirds during winter training. Stuart ended high school with a 4.23 GPA. "The lessons learned and friends made with the Firebirds are unmatched by any other team. Being a Firebird has taught me so much and has left a lasting impression on my life that makes me proud to say I am a part of Firebird softball."

The scholarship is named for Coach Randy Yates, a former Firebirds coach and advisory who epitomized the spirit of sportsmanship and the love of the game. Coach Yates passed away in 2017. Learn more about the scholarship program here.

Today, a group of Firebirds helped our friends at the Northern Virginia Softball Umpires Association (NVSUA) with training at GMU. Thanks to everyone who participated. We look forward to helping out for the next couple Saturdays!

Congrats to Firebirds 16u-Sable for winning the USA Softball Spooky Bash in Virginia Beach by hanging on for a 9-8 win over Unity Vaughan 2024/2025 in the final. They went 5-0 on the weekend.
